Oh My... Shiny!

Apologies for the crappy photo, taken on my phone late last night.

There are sometimes I know I just shouldn't go to my FLGS (Dropzone Games), as I'll see something there I might not be able to resist. I find I'm more likely to be distracted if I have a LOT on my painting plate already (currently ACW, Mechanicum, Lamenters, and a couple of other things), so here's the new, shiny thing I've purchased.

Photo from Dakka member Valtyr, used without permission.

I picked up the Relic Hunters box, and have added a Guild Riflemen box that the nice folks at Wyrd sent me in January. After putting together these plastic models, I must say I'm very impressed. I'm not just impressed with the level of detail and the number of components that increases the layered feel of the models, but I'm also impressed by the amount of character pushed into each sculpt. Bravo Wyrd, bravo!

Now don't worry, I won't be suddenly playing Malifaux, but this does give me a chance to scratch the itch to paint these lovely figs. Once I'm done I'll be selling them off, that's my justification for buying them in the first place ; )

Spotlight: Violet Paint

The wonderful work of Christina Piras!

Another blog to shine the spotlight on! Recently I found my way to Violet Paint, the blog of Christina Piras, an Italian painter. Christina's work is very crisp and clean - something I've always strived for with my painting - and her more recent works have some pretty cool colors modulations - something I've been messing around with at times.

Most of Christina's blog is a repository of her finished work, and as such it makes a great "reference library" to draw inspiration from. I heartily urge you to check it out.

The bases are here! The bases are here!

And now I can start showing them all together!

I am very happy! On Wednesday the first part of my base order from Dragon Forge Design arrrived. I was so excited, in fact, that all my other paint jobs were pushed to the side so I could get a chunk of the bases painted up and finally see my recent Mechanicum stuff added to them : )  In all I'll be getting over 100 bases from this very cool range - the Tech Deck series, found here!

As you can see on the two samples above, I've gone for a fairly dark scheme, in keeping with the brooding feeling of the rest of the models. Lots of steel (in various stages of decay), some exposed brass trim (with verde gris), some green cabling, and the ubiquitous hazard striping.

On some bases I've painted some of the cabling with hazard striping too, just for that extra pop of detailing. The rusty/dusty look on the bases is from a final dusting of Rust Red and Rust Orange weathering powders from Secret Weapon Miniatures.

Here's my current WIP for the Mechanicum, and the base he'll end up on.

And finally, I'll leave you with a clearer shot of the rebased (or freshly based) models so far.

I hope you like them : )

What you can do with a little putty...

Originally he was the Daemonic Herald of Nurgle from Forgeworld.

Now, with a little putty work and a paintjob, he's a Mechanicum Magos.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said about the work on my others Magos/Adepts, except to say thanks to Eye Of Error for his quickfire tutorial on painting liquid in vials, found here.

As a reminder, here he is in his pre-paint stage.

And here's a shot to entice you over to our Guns Of April blog. This year's project is just a month away from hitting the table at Adepticon. Hopefully everyone will be ready!

Spotlight: Gardens of Hecate

The Morbid Homunculus, by Nightmare, groundskeeper of the Gardens of Hecate

Over the last few months I've stumbled across a few dark corners of the blogosphere that are full of wondrous treasures, exciting works from minds twisted in some way (a good way), crazy things that more folks should see. So, I think when I have a spare moment here and there, I'll link to them from a Spotlight post, this one being the first.

I urge you to strap on your Blanchitsu goggles and take a stroll through the Gardens of Hecate, still in their springtime, but already ripe with wonderful fruit, and the promise of more to come.

I have a few more Spotlights planned, so keep your eyes peeled.

Brass Snakes

Another Mechanicum Adept/Magos is completed!

This guy was quite popular when I posted the construction photo of him. I hope he hasn't lost any of his charm now that he's painted. I finally remembered to throw a little patina onto the brass sections of the model (using the Secret Weapon Miniatures' Storm Cloud Wash).

These models continue to roll out at a reasonably slow pace, but once my ACW painting is out of the way I hope to ramp up production : )

Mechanicum Firepower

And with a little break in the construction of my Mechanicum... well... errr... constucts, I've been able to finish the painting on my large quad autocannon servitor. I've broken up the large areas of red a little with some chipping damage and some weathering powder (Clay Brown from Secret Weapon Miniatures).

Here he is from a variety of angles : )

The other models on my painting table now are these two Magos models. For me these two typify the variation found amongst the upper echelons of the Mechanicum. They certainly break the idea that the devotees of the Omnissiah all look the same.

Off to Cold Wars in Lancaster, PA, this weekend, so not much time for painting, but thankfully I get to look at toy soldiers all day ; )

Wild West Exodus - Animated Brute

After finishing my latest Union regiment (the 7th Wisconsin) over the weekend, I had a night to fitter away on a single miniature. I decided to get some paint on the Animated Brute from Wild West Exodus while the Kickstarter is still running. I've been enjoying the blue pants I've been painting on my Union models, so I decided to go for something similar on this zombie, but I added a little more texture, hopefully giving him a bit of a denim feel. Just perfect for the period, I think.

At the moment he may be a little too clean, but I plan to add some weathering powders very soon. I just ran out of time last night.

Check out the Wild West Exodus Kickstarter here!
