Mechanicum - Krios Venator Tank Destroyer - Overhauled.

So, I'm pretty sure I've decided to go with my own Krios Venator Tank Destroyer for the Old Line Massacre this coming weekend. Yes, it will be the only piece of armor in my arsenal, but apparently the big gun is quite nasty, so if I can get a round or two of shooting off with it, I'll be golden : )

Anyway, I built this model way back in 2006 (or something like that) to accompany my Adeptus Mechanicus army of the era. It was based on a piece of artwork from the Horus Heresy Visions artbooks. Originally it was painted a military green, to keep to connected with my Genswick Rifles army. Obviously I've gone and changed that up.

I hope you like the red.

And here's the original scheme. This image can be found on the Sepulchre Of Heroes blog, and comes up as the number two image option on a Google search for "Mechanicus Tank". Regular visitor (and fellow blogger) Mordian 7th has an excellent tank that comes up as number four : )

Cheers
Dave

  1. Looks great!

Did you strip the model first, or merely paint over top of it?

    1. Thanks Greg, I just painted over the top. Applied the base coat of Hull Red over the green, Carefully dry brushed up with some brighter reds, applied some thin shading washes, then tidied up all the details (a lot more work on the sides than in the center).

  2. Awesome! One of my favorites from your older series. It looks even better in red. :)

  3. I liked the green but I also like the red. It's one of those pieces that makes you relic from the good old days of White Dwarf.

    1. Thanks Tim, both have their upsides, for sure. And yes, it is a relic ; )

  4. Fantastic! While not nearly as bulky as FW new adaptation, I think yours is much more fitting with the wackiness of the Meachanicum. While the red is much more fitting with the army, the green did add a nice contrast to all that red and helped the driver standout.

    1. Thanks! It is based off a cool pic in the HH artbooks, which I'll track down soon, but it does have that nice Mechanicum oddness to it. And yes, the green certainly did help the driver pop, not so much with the red, I tried to keep the red armor darker to give him a little pop. : )

    2. I remember the show case back in the old editions of WD, at the time it seemed like every month you had a completely new converted army. Oh how I remember the Cathay, the IG with ad mech and the Custodes. Anyways it's nice to see the old model again, and in its proper colors ;) I am glad you didn't get the new tank. Sure it's awesome, but I think hand crafted machines is kind of what makes an ad mech army so cool. When I think ad mech I think of the weird technologies and esoteric devices/ machines. You are only limited by your own imagination and you bits box. Keep up the great work! I can't wait to see what you do for your Magos. Having been working on a 40k legal army myself I'm trying to figure out what kind off odd device I can give my magos on bike to ride..

    3. Thanks Matt! I'd consider using the bike as an Abeyant (if you are going the 30K route), or now that Unbound armies can take whatever they please, think about something more exotic from an alien race (Necron Destroyer Lord perhaps?)

  5. Excellent - I have seen that model so many times searching the www for mechanicus - never knew it was yours. Personally I prefer the red.

    1. Thanks for that. I think if the green had been painted with the same care as the red it might have held up well.

  6. Absolutely hilarious. The stuff 40K is made of. The new red is a definite improvement too.

    1. Thanks Mike. Yep, the 40K aesthetic is full of completely whacky stuff : )

  7. Excellent! I really dig how that turned out with the re-paint. I happen to have a similar looking vehicle (also based on that old art piece, though not as cool as yours) knocking about in the Closet of Doom, had never thought of using it as a Krios. Brilliant!

    2. I also have one somewhere - made by Trev from the old TF and Plastic Krak. Perhaps that should be the next painting project.

  8. Dave, for years I've thought of building one of those, especially when my wife decided she was interested in doing a Mechanicus (and then later, a Dark Mechanicus) army, but I was never sure if I could pull it off.

I have to say that, while a bit different from the original art (I know the picture you're referring to, I saw it last month during my periodic browsing of Collected Visions), you have absobloodylutely nailed the feel of it.
