Woohoo! - And an Update

Thank you all for your votes on my models, I expect they had a great deal to do with my success in the Historical Single category. A Silver in that category was very exciting, up against competition that I thought was going to blow me out of the water. The Gold in Historical Unit was also welcome, as second place went to a mate of mine who has been coming on in leaps and bounds over the last few years (nice work Rob!)

One letdown was the Gold in Historical Vehicle. Why would a first place be a let down? Because it was the only entry. I'm hoping that next year, particularly with all the great tank kits available, that there'll be a whole bunch of entries. Some competition to help drive an improvement in my painting.

BUT, the biggest letdown of all was being awarded the Silver in Historical Single category at the show, only to find out this morning that I hadn't won it at all. It seems that the wrong slides were put into the presentation and I was actually amongst the trophies. I must admit I agree with the "actual" list of winners and they truly deserve their awards, but it doesn't lessen the disappointment I'm feeling right now.  I know mistakes happen in the rush at the end, I've made one or two myself in the past when running Golden Demon, but perhaps it's the nudge I needed to steer me clear of competitive painting and keep busting out armies. Hmmmm... decisions, decisions.

Head to Cool Mini or Not to check out all the entries and the final winners in each category. Lovely stuff all round.

Cheers
Dave

PS. My minis and lights are going back to the east coast on the Battlefront truck, via next weekend's Chicago wargames show Little Wars, so I won't have too many new photos until wednesday of next week, although I might post a few of the Adepticon action between now and then.

  2. So close between yours and my Bronze winning entry. I am already planning next years historical mini. I will give you more competition in the vehicle entry next year. I already have plans.

    1. A lovely model James! I just took another look at the "winners" on the CMoN site and it seems that my figure isn't in the top three, with Bennett's sniper listed as 1st, the Soviet soldier as 2nd and your Nocturna as 3rd.

That's probably how I would have called it, so perhaps there was an error on the day and I should expect an email from CMoN.

    2. Well I got my answer this morning. I didn't win a trophy in Historical Single.

The results are as listed on the site.

Kind of pissed off right now. : (

  4. Congratulations on the placings, I didn't do nearly as well with my entries. But it was a bit of a let down to see only the one entry in the historical vehicle category. I was most disappointed that there was only one entry in the new talent (14 and under) category.

    1. I remember seeing your Dancers and wondering which category they would be in. I find that the Crystal Brush categories aren't intuitive, but that could be years of influence from the Golden Demons.

Hopefully they'll do a better job over the next year promoting to the right crowds (ie. those that don't know it's happening).

  5. The team tourney was not quite what I expected, given how much emphasis there is on costumes and fluff in the 40k teams. At least I got the chance to do some full on RPG in the final round with Domus & McClure!

  6. Maybe you just need t"o knock out an army project for fun. Let yourself enjoy the thrill of miniatures painted en masse. Painting for competition is quite stressful, as the mini is not longer a fun toy, but a means to an end.

    1. I'm currently "taking a break" while painting up some Napoleonic Russians. This weekend I really have to get started on my Procession of Morr again. I think I might do a bunch of building (flagellants, war altar, knights etc.)

I'll have to give your Ultras a run for their money ; )

In July I'll be working on an entry or two for Golden Demon.

  7. Great to catch up quickly with you at Adepticon, Dave! Sorry to hear about the mix up in judging, but I'd imagine you'd feel somewhat let down if you hadn't entered at all. I didn't get any entries completed this year as I was too busy painting for the team tourney, and it's killing me that I didn't enter now...Oh well, there's always Games Day.
