The Storm Warden Sternguard Squad, complete!

Work continues apace on the Great Storm Wardens Project of 2010. All of our collaborators are chugging along nicely and posting regularly about how their part of the project is going. Keep an eye on their blogs via the blog list on the top right column.

Anyway, above are my finished Storm Warden Sternguard Squad. Ten rugged Veterans who have all served their time in the militant arm of the Ordo Xenos, the Deathwatch. In addition they wear the silver helmets that are a mark of the Veterans of the Storm Wardens. When Ron gets his Terminator Squad wrapped up, you'll see the silver helms on them too.

Keep your eyes out for a post on how to build the Special Issue Ammunition Magazines (SIAM) for their bolters, coming soon to a blog near you.

There have been a few questions regarding the colors used for this Chapter. Here's the very basic rundown of how I've been painting the key areas.

Armor:
Heavy drybrush of Boltgun Metal, wash of Badab Black, highlight of Chainmail, highlight of Mithril Silver. Paint basecoat of Regal Blue, highlight with a 70:30 mix of Regal Blue and Enchanted Blue [yes John Shaffer, I used Enchanted Blue], highlight of 30:70 mix of Regal Blue and Enchanted Blue.

Black areas:
Basecoat Chaos Black, highlight 50:50 mix of Chaos Black and Adeptus Battlegrey, highlighted with Adeptus Battlegrey.

Red areas:
Basecoat Scab Red, Highlight 50:50 mix of Scab Red and Blood Red, highlight Blood Red, finish eyes and gems with 'Ardcoat.

And here's the veteran sergeant, ready for skull-pounding action. I hope you like the squad and that it encourages you to get involved by clicking on the bottom at the top right of this blog.

WEEKLY STORM WARDENS MINI-DRAWING AT SCW

Speaking of getting involved, John Shaffer, GW Hobby Guru Extraordinaire, and Games Workshop themselves have provided a Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer (new on sprue, no box) that will be given away tomorrow to one lucky contributor! We'll be running more freebie giveaways like this throughout the build-up of the project, so you have to be "in it to win it", as they say. Please note that freebies won throughout the project will not affect anyone's chance at the final army.

For more info on the Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer, head to the Santa Cruz Warhammer blog NOW! : )

Cheers

  2. Okay, I have to admit that seeing these models on Secret Weapon bases made me a bit giddy. These look GREAT!

  3. Why would the meltas have an ammo magazine full of bullets?

  4. Dave- great stuff, now I have to double my efforts to try and keep up.

Rick- I think they are combi-melta /bolters if you look close there is a barrel under the melta barrel.

  5. @Rick - Yep, John is correct. Any number of Sternguard can take a combi weapon for just 5pts extra. It's a great way to add some tank killing ability to the squad without reducing their infantry killing capacity.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, don't forget to get your donations in.

  6. Kind of an odd question, and I hope it makes sense, but how do you go about doing the highlights on the metal? I really love, and I truly mean this, the models and yearn for something that even compares to that for my Grey Knights. One issue I've been having is doing highlights. I usually do a heavy drybrush of Chainmail, Badab Black, then I put Chainmail on the edges and then go over that with Mithril Silver. But I don't have nearly as good of a "blend" between the lights and darks in mine. I think it is because I'm not experienced with trying to highlight, or maybe I'm using too much Badab Black. Do you recommend any way of trying to find a natural looking lighting before applying paint or does that just come with time and skill? Any tips at all?

  7. Wow dude! Painting looks amazing. Iv just started the hobby and beginning to paint my army now. I made a blog just to track my journey as a new 40k player. I would very much like your opinion on my painting. Check my blog, please follow if you like. Only started it on Friday but its coming along.

  8. @Michael Hogan - to be honest mate, most of it is practice. One thing I do recommend you do is take a look at as many pictures of 'Eavy Metal painted Space Marines as you can. One thing you'll start to notice is that no matter the pose of the Space Marine, they all have their highlights in almost identical places, many of which might defy the "natural order" of light falling, but it's a system that works really well for large slabs of armor. Get familiar and comfortable with those highlight locations, then practice, practice, practice.

@Busty - nice work, looks like you're having some fun there. Remember though, that this is a hobby for life, so you can take your time posting ; )
