My Leitpold the Black

I was really excited about finally getting this guy painted. It is such a wonderful sculpt from Forgeworld, so beautifully detailed, and incredibly well cast. It was quite unlike the Finecast models I've had to deal with. He also painted up wonderfully quickly. I was able to take him primed to War Games Con, start painting him on Thursday night, paint him a bit more on the Friday night, wrap him up on the Saturday morning, AND get him entered in the painting competition. Unfortunately he didn't grab a prize, but I'm still pretty happy to use him as an Empire Captain in my Army of Morr.

Tell me that face doesn't just exude arrogance!

Thanks for checking him out.

Cheers
Dave

  1. Lovely model, well worthy of being the figurehead to any army. I do love the colour combination of the horse, purple material and the armour.

And yes that is a great look on his face. Arrogance or constipation.

  2. Great wash out on the armor. Makes it look vintage and used but still functional. Any particular receipe for it?

    1. Hi Joe

The brass/bronze weathered armor was painted as follows:
      • Vallejo Tinny Tin
      • Vallejo Brassy Brass
      • GW Agrax Earthshade
      • Secret Weapon Storm Cloud wash
      • Stprm Cloud mixed with a little P3 Morrow white for the lighter verde gris
      • highlights of either Brassy Brass, or Brassy Brass/Mithril Silver mix

      I hope that helps.

Love the detail work on his face.
    Definitely exudes arrogance.

  4. The face is outstanding, there must have been some serious opposition in the painting comp.

    1. There was some stiff competition in the fantasy single category, more so than the sci-fi single, which was pretty strange. But I'm satisfied with his look anyway ; )

  7. Lovely work on him and he is a very nice figure. The quality of your work on his face is extremely tight. The only suggestions I'd offer is that you could do with a few subtle washes on his skin (it may be you've done this and the camera didn't pick it up). It is just that human flesh isn't uniform (unless you're plastered in foundation - maybe Leopold has been to visit Maximus Factorum the cosmetics merchant in Marienburg). So some subtle green on his jowls under his cheeks, some purple in his eye sockets and some red on his cheeks and ears.

    Very nice armour and fabric.

  8. Really nice! In particular I like the black on the robe - it is often difficult to avoid it becoming greyish. And black should really be black on "Mr Black". :-)
Also, I like the way you positioned his pupils. It adds even more character to a face that already has alot of character.

  12. That is a seriously impressive piece of painting (and a pretty good sculpt too). As others have said, the face in particular is full of character. WIsh GW would get their finger out and produce some new mounts for the rank and file knights that are equal to characters like these!

  13. Very cool piece, and excellent metallics (I was going to ask for the recipe, but you anticipated that).. I've added that Secret Weapon wash to my Gen Con shopping list!
