Tanith Treadfethers

Just a quick post for today, here're a few shots of the first Heavy Weapons Squad for the Tanith army I'm working on, a Missile Launcher squad. To represent the Tanith 'treadfethers', I thought I'd use Space Marine Missile Launchers as they're quite a bit shorter and a little more rugged looking than the IG equivalent. I tried to add a bit of extra character into each base. I hope you like them.

More to come later in the week.

Cheers
Dave

  1. I do like them, great paint job and I do like the missile launcher's good choice.

One slight problem they are missing the all inportant cloak's which all tanith have and there dagger's. Even when the Tanith were merged into the other regiment they all got a cloak and dagger. Sorry to be picky I do love what you have done, and well done for having a go.

  2. wow, they look really good.

Shame I have already built my own missile teams, as I would have stolen this idea for sure!

Keep up the inspiring work good sir!

  3. The basing works too, simple, naturalistic and a style not so often seen. The variation in light and dark is a clever way of setting off the dark uniforms, but not leaving the guardsmen feeling like silhouettes.

  4. Hi guys

    Thanks for your comments!

@Commissar Dave - I appreciate your point about the cloaks, but it has always been my impression that the Ghosts don't always wear their cloaks everywhere they go, when not wearing them they'll be rolled up and strapped to backpacks (or inside them). They wear them while "on mission" should their role in that mission require it, or as protection against wind and so on. From a commission practicality standpoint, modeling cloaks on all the models was out of the customers price range. Cloaks will be saved to mark out special characters and squad sergeants etc.

In my next post I'll show off a few of the backpacks that I added "cloak rolls" to.

As for the straight silver, I'm still yet to find a good supply of the "new" Blood Angels daggers, the ones that I feel match the description the best. Once I do I'll be able to go back and add as appropriate. Suggestions are welcome.

  5. Could we get more detail on the prone figure?

    How was he converted, etc.

  6. Sorry mate I did not mean to affend and when I look back at my comment I think I was a little harsh. You have done a sterlin job and I really do like them.

Do you do commision work using green stuff?

  7. @Lane - I'll try to put some pics of him pre-paint in the next post

@Commissar Dave - no offense taken mate, I just wanted to make sure the parameters of the project were a little clearer. As for the commission work, I do. If you have a question, check out my profile and feel free to shoot me an email.

  8. Wow i loves those guys! A few questions though, did you greenstuff those gloves on the fether holders? and are you going to make other Hvy. Weapon teams? (always mentions .30's and .50's that the ghosts used), and are you going to make a Caffran? (he always used a tread fether in the later books, even though he was dead before the last book), and one more thing, are you going to remake your snipers? or were they apart of this project? (i loved the rock cover you used for them), thanks

  9. Heya Dave,

Great minis... These Tanith are inspiring me to do that all-impossible army of Ghosts every Guardsman dreams of. :)

    A small thought though...

I can't help but think the one standing with the missile launcher slung in one hand (middle team in the top image) looks... wrong. The missile tube looks to be imbalanced. How is he holding it at such an extreme angle? With the handle forward on the tube, the rear of the tube should be on the ground. At most, the tube should be level, like you would expect a briefcase, perhaps.

Even by saying "it's loaded, so it's front heavy" just doesn't 'feel' right to me - the visual mind doesn't work that way.

  10. @Koppenflak - I think I agree with you. I have a few days before I hand these guys over so I'll see what I can do with the angle.

  11. @Njal - The missile launchers are from Space amrine scouts, so the hands are already gloved. I decided to keep them as they'd give me another place to add some color. The plan is to do a few more Heavy Weapons teams, including .30s. Should the customer want, he can use the kneeling fether as Caffran. The beret is in keeping with Caff's look, and I've since added his dragon tattoo too. Finally, those snipers are part of this project.

  12. If you have some time, I would suggest drilling out the backs of the missile tubes. Otherwise those would have a hell of a recoil (and the missle wash would take care of any unsightly unibrows...).

For what it is worth, I always imagined the tread-fethers to be more like the Steel Legion missile launchers and more like a launch rail rather than a tube. More compact, easier to fabricate, etc.
