Games Day Baltimore 2010 (part4-The Last)

Following my three hour stint at the Golden Demon Lounge I new I had to make up for lost time. I grabbed my stack of Dan Abnett books (the hardcovers at least) and raced down to the Black Library signing line. Not only was Dan there, but also his lovely wife Nik, and Gav Thorpe, Nathan Long, C.L. Werner, and Mike Lee! I was able to dash out of the line, buy a copy of The Sabbat Worlds, and get back in line to have Nik sign her story on the compilation and Dan sign "my stack".

After that I didn't have much time but was able to swing by the Jawaballs table again, say "G'Day" to a few old friends, spend far too much at the ForgeWorld stand and then start packing up my Blood Pact army. While doing the last bit I got the chance to talk to Jacob, the winner of the Storm Wardens army, and he is a really great guy! His love for 40K and enthusiasm about the project will, no doubt, see him taking good care of the army for years to come!

Anyway, all that meant I missed the award ceremony for the Golden Demons (they changed up the timing and location for it all, and I hadn't paid any attention to the new schedule), but was able to stand on stage for a brief second along with the other Gold trophy winners and see Todd Swanson awarded his FOURTH Slayer Sword! Boy, did he deserve it. A very beautiful Lictor indeed!

So, thats about it for my Baltimore Games Day experience. If it seems rushed and disjointed, that's because it was : )

I spent the bulk of my time doing what I love to, talking to friends (new and old) and having a great time with toy soldiers. So thank you to all my friends who were there for making it a great day, and congratulations to those who walked away with Golden Demon trophies too (Kyle, Kirill, Jeff, Yuri, Marc, Mathieu, Todd, Zach, Alex, and anyone else I may have missed!)

So here he is, my latest Primarch conversion - Night Haunter, Primarch of the Night Lords.

I hope you like him.

  2. Great conversion, very much how I imagined him to appear. No fuss, just pure terror, sweeping down from bulkheads to eviscerate...well, anyone really!

Konrad Curze, the Night Haunter, was alone throughout his early life unlike the other Primarchs. He lived on the dark planet of Nostramo, which primarily mined Adamantium (See whut they did thar? :P). He saw criminal elements doing bad stuff as wrong, and so started a vigilante crusade against terror by becoming just that; he would instill fear into the populace to reduce crime through brutal executions.

I'm not sure on how he turned traitor, but fluff hints that he regretted it, as a Callidus assasin was allowed entry into his sanctum by Curze himself and purportedly killed him. "The Horror....The Horror..."

  3. I introduced myself at Wargames Con, thanking you and John for the years at White Dwarf, which I consider the best run in the magazine's history.

You seemed to be the everyman hobbyists, inventive and accessible. Prior to this, my favorite things was your Cathyan army.

This is it. Not painting, not modeling, nor an investment of time and technique.

    Just genius, perfectly executed.

    Amazing.

  4. Capitola Family, Night Haunter was basically just a crazy sadistic Space Batman. He landed on some slum planet and brutally murdered anyone who broke the law, which eventually turned into him brutally murdering anyone who broke his strict and capricious set of rules. It kept the populace in check, but it was pretty miserable because, you know, Space Batman might disembowel you at a moment's notice for the slightest offense, real or percieved.

Anyway, during the Great Crusade the Night Lords, his Legion, earned a reputation for psychotic brutality and rule by fear, and the Emperor thought they were getting out of hand. He was leaning towards calling them to account for, well, terrorizing people and butchering anyone who complained. When the Heresy broke out, and the Night Lords decided to roll with Horus, not without reason.

Eventually they went back to their old home planet, saw that it had descended into the crime and chaos that it was mired in until Night Haunter showed up and started wrecking people into obedience, and pulverized the thing from orbit until it blew up.

The coolest thing about the Night Lords is that they didn't run back into the eye of terror immediately. They stuck around causing trouble for a while, sort of like Alpha Legion (who are the best legion), until eventually they decided to roll out on their own.

  5. Dave,

I have been a silent reader for a long time. A SW player myself, I thought that your highly converted thunderwolf squad was my favorite thing I've seen you do (granted Ive not been playing for as many years as many of your readers.)

This tops them all, and finally compelled me to comment on the site. I actually got a chill looking at the model - its legitimately creepy! The pose, especially how the feet are oriented, and the pleasant surprise i felt when I realized there was *no* jetpack was what really got me.

Congratulations on this fantastic piece of art.

  6. Dave,

That is one hell of a model. Very unique pose and a uniquely creepy model.

  10. Once again an amazing model, you sir have Talent!
You have a knack for bringing these models to life and depicting them as they deserve.

I am curious about having a conversion piece done, what is the appropriate way to contact you about such a thing?

  11. I saw the beginning of this while helping you put away models at WarGames Con. This is truly brilliant Dave. An amazing use of everyday bits to grow into something far more potent than the sum of its parts.

  13. Hi guys

Thank you all very much for your comments. it's words like these that really warm the cockles of of my modeling heart.

@JTaylor - unfortunately I'm no longer taking commissions, but if you'd like to talk through the idea, my email address is in the profile box in right hand column.

@ jason - it would seem so. Thanks once again for holding the books, and my place in line : )

    Cheers

  15. Well... what to say. Not trying to be nasty but that.. well i think thats the worst model you have done.

The helmet doesn't suit at all, the pose is awkward. Oh dear.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Pulse

No offense taken, but I must say you are wrong, I've painted many models that are far worse ; )

Sorry you don't like, but each to his own. What helmet would you have pictured? and what about the pose seems awkward to you?

    Cheers
    Dave

  18. Sorry Dave but i agree with Pulse

The pose is too static and flat for what should be a menacing model. He seems to hold his claw too limply and those, coupled with his leg positioning makes him look like he's squating over a ditch

Also the head looks a little too small and well... ordinary compared to how a primarch should look. he just looks like a CSM on a pipe.

Like i said, sorry. I'm normally the hugest fan of your work, but you've dropped the ball on this one i think.

  19. Dave, lovely entries - first time I've seen most of them.

  20. im pretty baffled on how people don't like this model, it looks amazing to me. by far one of the coolest primarchs and you did him justice.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Spencer - me too, but hey, not everyone likes the same pieces of art.

@Khorneguy - thanks for the clarifications on what you feel let this model down. I must disagree with you on the pose. Perhaps the photos don't show it, but in the flesh he is well balanced, perched carefully on the pipe top, ready, waiting, for his next victim. I based the pose on an old Dark Knight sketch I found online. I think it conveys a great deal of menace, but certainly not in the wild-eyed, berserker menace way you might expect from someone like Angron.

As for the head, I'm fine with it as I've been applying the "true-scale" ideals to the primarchs I've worked on.

Each to their own. You might not like, but I hardly think I've "dropped the ball".

    Cheers
    Dave

  22. Hi Dave,

I didn't expect a response that quickly, lol.

The pose i feel is very awkward on the legs to the point of not actually being possible especially on a curved surface such as the pipe he is perched on.

As for the helmet i would have had him having something like a shaped helmet, something from Nostraman lore - a creature of terror. Either that or just plain dark helmet as Kurze was never one for OTT things.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mmmm, interesting idea on the "creature of terror" from Nostroman lore. I think I'll tuck that one away for a future project.

I went with this simple helmet as in Soul Hunter (I think) it mentions Konrad looking at his armor and his Skull helm (or something so close it makes no difference). I figured rather than painting a skull on a beakie helmet, I'd use my all-time favorite SM helmet (or CSM in this case). The halo is my interpretation of the Corona Nox.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The helmet in question is Talos's helmet. Kurze is holding it in his hands as he talks to Talos about the future. Also the skull on the helmet is red. :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Shows you how closely I read it ; )

I guess I just wanted to use my favorite skull helm and read into it what I wanted.

    Cheers
    Dave

PS. Pulse, I'm working on a couple of Marines at the moment using the stylings that you used on a Marine project you've been working on. How goes that project? I'm keen to see how your scheme worked out on it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hold on, what? You follow my work? Nice of you to take an interest! :)

Unfortunately i have been a little tied up of late, army life slowing my work down, but i have managed to tidy up the marines a lot. I have made the thighs a little longer to tie in with the calves. Tidied up some of the armour patterning. When i get week spare i will crack on with them.

Any WIPs you can share with me so i can take a look? :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. No WIPs yet. Mine aren't "true-scale", just the regular size, but I thought you had some pretty nice stuff coming along there. Agreed in the thigh problem, good to hear you're making a shift there, but as you said, it was only really noticeable on the static legs. Anyway, I hope you get a chance to slow down and hobby soon ; )

    Cheers
    Dave

  29. Wauw. Amazing.

I like to Predator look he's got. Like he is sitting there all silent waiting for his next pray to walk by unknowingly.

    Simply amazing.

  30. See, here's the problem. You've got too much stuff to gawk over on your blog, it takes me so long to go through it all I *just now* came across this gem of a model.

I've always like the Night Haunter fluff, even though it was so scant, and there was never any art or a model. I think this makes up for the long wait, kudos.
