WW2 - I mentioned working on a few 15mm jobs.

I mentioned last post that I've been working on a few FOW projects recently. One of them is for a long-time follower of the blog, Jake. Back in April I asked Jake to help me out by 3-D sculpting a few parts for a Knight for me (hopefully I'll have parts in hand from by the end of the month). Payment for the sculpting work/time is going to be this squadron of USMC Shermans from the Pacific Theater. Jake sent me a bunch of reference photos that showed the additional wooden armor that crews would build for the sides of their tanks, and most of the photos show an amazing abundance of extra track sections, also used as improvised armor, draped over the tanks.

Anyway, here are some closer shots of the lead tank, with sheet metal skirting added to the lumber armor. This is based on the photo (apparently taken in Okinawa, 1945) at the bottom of this post.

Here's the color scheme that Jake would like to see on the tanks.

Now it's on to the painting : )

Cheers
Dave

  2. Jake would't happen to do 3D sculpting commissions would he? I have a couple of simple parts I would like to get sculpted...Jake--get ahold of me!

  3. Wow, I've never seen Shermans like that. And I'm majorly impressed that you've managed to pack all that character into 15mm.

  5. Wow Dave, these are looking absolutely amazing.

I feel like I'm getting the better end of the deal, so anything else you might want I will steeply discount mate!

    Just... amazing.

  6. Aw, no, please! No! I intend no disrespect to those who are interested in the setting or the scale, but I've seen more than one hobby blog becoming less and less interesting after starting to deal with 15mm WWII stuff. So while I wish you the very best in your endeavour, Dave: Please, please tell me that this is only temporary ;)

    1. Hey mate, click on the Flames of War tag in my cloud on the right. You'll notice I've done a bunch of 15mm stuff over the years. I don't think there's any need to worry about my direction ; )

    2. Ah, sorry then ;) It's just that I've seen several blogs that just completely ceased to be interesting (to me, at least) after turning to 15mm. Sorry Dave, seems like I just panicked there ;) Carry on!

  7. These are amazing. I've never seen anything like those tanks before. I am in awe at your work with the green stuff too.

Was the use of wood in response to some specific threat? Or were they just using whatever they had on hand? (Which is exactly what I would have done)
