Sharrowkyn

I was recently commissioned to build and paint Nykona Sharrowkyn, one of the Raven Guard marines to escape the Dropsite Massacre on Istvaan V. He's a great character who has built a small following amongst Black Library's Horus Heresy devotees. When a character shoots Fulgrim in the head, and kills another iconic character in single combat (twice), then you've got a keeper.

The tough thing about translating this character into miniature form is that he is essentially described as a shadow, an absence of light. Kind of tough to highlight someone like that ; )

This all meant that positioning him in the shadows, but being impacted by some light source, was important. I played around with a few ideas, and settled on the model you see here. I hope you like him as much as his new owner.

And there's another one on his way too.

Cheers
Dave

  1. That is a great take on the character - love the composition of the piece and the OSL is superb. Bravo!

  2. If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times Nykona. Don't jump pack around with your swords out!

  3. I really like how you did the black color. Btw, what did you do with the raven skull that was the mini before you painted it?

    1. Thanks! The skull is on the second Sharrowkyn I'm doing for a friend.

  4. Lovely glow effects from the light. Do you have any pointers on how to paint yellow glow that way? I'm trying to achieve a similar effect with my necrons

    1. I think, in essence, the most important thing about getting a good "glow" is to make sure a) the light source is the brightest thing on the model, and b) that the area surrounding/beyond the glow is darker than usual. I would recommend checking out a blog like Massive Voodoo and looking for a good tutorial on OSL. I'm still learning and experimenting.

Most of what I know was learnt at a seminar I took at Adepticon earlier this year... Thanks Victoria Lamb!

  5. That's a pretty great piece of work Dave, considering until I saw "yours", the only way I that I could come up with doing him was painted almost jet black, in a corner similarly darkened, with just the red eyes showing.

    1. I think that could look cool too, something with a very Spiderman/Venom kind of feel to it.

  6. Love the lamp effect.

Any chance that we could see a tutorial?

    1. Thanks Tony. I don't think I could do the tutorial justice, so I recommend checking out other great painting sites like Massive Voodoo : )

  7. I recognize the crossguards on those blades from the GK termie kit, but how did you attach them so cleanly?

    1. Hi JW. Well spotted. actually the entire sword in each hand (and the hand for that matter) are from the GK sprue, attached to the arms at the wrist. : )

    2. Oh! Sorry. I didn't realize there was a pair that came like that out of the box.
I thought you'd convoluted them out of multiple parts somehow. :P

    1. Hi Lord Krabo. The jump pack is from the Blood Angels Sanguine Guard set, trimmed down at the back and reworked with putty to give it a slightly slimmer profile. Hope that helps.

  10. For me, Nykona Sharrowkyn is the Non-Primarch Greatest Astartes ever. I mean seriously, this guy kicked Lucius the Eternal's Arse twice, and nailed a Primarch in the head with a Sniper Rifle....He is is just the right side of Badass without being "Mary Sue".
