Building something bigger

Continuing to use the "madness" of John Blanche (some might say "vision") as inspiration, here are anther couple of models I've been building for my Mechanicum army.

This guy started out as a Tech-Adept or Magos of some kind. At the moment he seems fairly un-augmented, but that will change once the paint starts to go onto the model. Of course, the giant mechanical insect/arachnid that he's using as a palanquin keeps things fairly interesting. I've seen quite a few excellent Mechanicus/Spider centaur/Drider-type models, and was tempted to go down that path, but hopefully I've created something a little more unique to my army.

This one started off planning to be THE arch Magos in my army, but he has kind of grown (and at the same time diminished) into some kind of massive Praetorian monstrosity.

The basis for his tracked unit is a FW Grot tank, clad in a layer of plasticard to tidy things up a little. The autocannons are from the Aegis Defence Line quad gun. I'll mount this guy on a large, oval base and perhaps he could be used as a Forgefiend.

Cheers
Dave

  1. Both are Awesome with a capital A. The big fellow looks very promising already.

While it pains me to see a Grot Tank covered up the end result looks great, best use of the Aegis line I have seen (they never look right mounted on vehicles to me). The 'pilot' steals the show though, looks almost simple yet it is spot on.

  2. Dave, the admec magos looks amazing! Very inspirational. I need to go back and catch up on your earlier posts, what has brought you back to this project?

    1. Thanks BC, I think it was reading Priests of Mars and converting the war shrine bearers that reignited the passion for this strangeness ; )

  3. Dave you are truly tapping into the Blanche Mechanicus. I think this is some of your most inspired 40k work! I can't wait to see more.

  4. Again, looking wicked man. I wonder, when you paint them up will you be able to bring a bit of that blanche style into the paint job? now that would be something!

    1. I'll be tackling the paint job in my usual style, but there'll be some obvious parallels thanks to the shared palette of red, black, white and gold. Fingers crossed it'll pay the right amount of homage ; )

  5. Awesome work, man! I dig the uber-praetorian, that's going to look sharp! I did up a 'drider' style arch magos a while back, thought you might like to see it:

Really looking forward to seeing praetorian and the magos painted up - inspiring stuff as always!

    1. Your Magos are looking great, I particularly like the one that echoes the style of the HH art book image.

    1. Amusingly enough, I originally bought the Grot tanks to use as the basis for a Kaban Machine commission that never panned out.

  7. I love the creepy look of your stuff. It has the broken feel of Guy Davis' work on BDPR; those feeble, unnatural limbs. Very nice.

  8. That spider riding tech priest is just wonderous...

I'm really looking forward to seeing this army come together.

  10. That Magos is the sauce. I did wonder for a minute if it was some sort of Ethereal (as in Tau) but I suspect that's just the plastic and the instinctive sight of 'robed dude on a palanquin'.

    1. I think the Empire wizard head gives it a slight "Tau Ethereal" look, but hopefully painting will diminish that.

  11. You could just use him as a Quadgun emplacement if you wanted to... haha

    1. But then I'll have to make a defense line too ; )

  12. Both of these conversions are sickness!. I love the use of the Empire wizard mask for the Magos, and the use of Necron parts just fits the bill perfectly.

The forge fiend conversion reminds me one of the hunter killers from Terminator.

    Great work as always!
