Dark and Angry!

There has been some more progress this week on my Lamenters/Badab War army. Namely wrapping up the test model for the Death Company (above) and starting on the next four models (below).

Originally I was reticent to include any Death Company or Sanguinary Guard in my army as I thought their primary colors were white and gold respectively. I wanted this army to be grim, dark, and full of anger. White just didn't speak to me. When I took another look at the Imperial Armour book I noticed that the Lamenters Death Company were actually black, I changed my mind very quickly.

One change I have made, however, to the scheme is to replace the red Xs of the typical BA Death Company with the bright yellow of the Lamenters, providing a stronger link back to the regular Chapter Marines.

These four are nearing completion. Just a bit of touch up, then highlighting the black. Once I've painted the next five Death Company bodies, I'll paint up the nine backpacks I need to finish off the entire squad.

Anyways, I hope you like how they're coming along.

Someone asked, in a recent post, if I have a list ready for the army. Well, I kind of do. Here goes:

HQ: Unsure at the moment

Elites:
• Furioso Dreadnought with Blood Talons

Troops:
• 10 Tactical Marines - Serg w/powerfist & plasma pistol, 1 w/plasma gun, 1 w/plasma cannon
• 10 Death Company - 1 w/powerfist, 2 x melta pistols
• 5 Assault Marines - Serg w/powerfist & plasma pistol, 1 x meltagun
• 5 Assault Marines - Serg w/powerfist, 1 x meltagun

Heavy Support:
• Storm Raven - unsure of final weapon configuration.

If you have any thoughts, feel free to leave them in the comments below, or let me know next week when you visit the Grand Opening Event for Dropzone Games. I'll be hanging out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so make sure you drop by!

  1. You should certainly convert Chapter Master Malakim Phoros (from IA). I'm sure you could do him some justice!

    1. Tempting though he is, I don't want this army to get out of hand. I want to keep it small, as I have dozens of other plans to enact. Consequently it'll either be a Tycho analogue, or possibly a Librarian.

And thanks for blazing the trail with your great looking Lamenters!

      Cheers

  2. Good Lord.. you and those checks! Please share how you're able to get the checkers so tight and clean on the knee pads.

I love the way they are coming along!

    1. It's fairly simply Tim, thin your black paint, paint on your grid, fill in the alternate squares. Then practice, practice, practice ; )

    2. Ooooh... practice! See, I knew I was missing something :) I've deliberately avoided paint schemes with check patterns before, maybe it's time I try it out myself :)

    3. OK... those CrAzY Checks... How OCD are you with them? are you painting them all the same? ie... 1st row is 8...etc?

  3. Looking sharp. I'm excited to see you doing some Marines again. I actually still remember your Crimson Fists on the back cover of a WD a decade ago fondly (and I still have it). I haven't seen you do Marines since I started following your blog regularly.

People complain about Marines getting too much love, but I've been completely in love with them since 1994 and still love seeing what people can do to take them to the next level creatively in terms of conversions and painting.

  4. I thought lamenters death company were the ones with white armor not black?

    1. I've seen them done in white (I think Aventine's are white) but the IA books on the Badab Wars have them in black. I prefer the black.

    2. Well, according to the Codex, all Death Companies are black with exception of Angels Encarmine... Who along with their Sanguinary Guard are "Alabaster".. Why can't they just say white?

  5. I'm a little disappointed that the Lamenters have been retconned to include the Death Company, but you're making them look very cool indeed.

I'm looking forward to seeing the army completed!

On the bright side - you've got a ready-made excuse if you have bad luck with this army...;)

    1. I'd never blame it on the history of my army, I'll be laying the blame squarely on my ineptitude! ; )

  6. I agree wholeheartedly with Aventine, You would make Malakim look boss, perfect for your Lamenters!

  7. That yellow is really vibrant against that black - maybe a little too much. The black is looking very plain in comparison with the current highlights.

Were you planning to take the highlights further on the black - a la the 'Eavy Metal style of the new Ravenwing Bikes from the starter set? It looks like they use a similar base to where you're at now, but go one level further to define the edges.

I think if you did that, it would gel the armour more with the yellow.

The reds and golds are fantastic, as is the crisp white and bones.

    1. Yep, still work to do on my black. And then it'll be on to doing battle damage. I still have to work out the best way to match that with the dark brown chipping on my regular Lamenters.

    2. I suggest that if you plan to chip the armor, I BELIEVE it's the same armor they wore as regular Lamentors therefore yellow, So, maybe show an underlying Yellow scheme?

I saw a Youtube video where someone over painted a rust color with the base, the took a tooth brush and water to it to show underlying color. May not be what you want here tho.

  8. Hey Dave!

I know this isn't about this particular post, but I wanted to ask... Have th WI guys ever considered doing a "army showcase" sort of thing in the mag... You know, where you have photos of some private citizens awesome army for us all to look at? I would love it if you guys could include something like that... It is so much fun to look at other peoples toy soldiers, you know?

Anyway, sorry this is totally not related to the post; the marines look mean:)

  9. I like the skin colors Dave as they add a fun ghostly demonic look to them that I think it rightly deserved for any Blood Angels chapter:).

  10. I hope this won't come off as a stupid question, but why are they on square bases?

    1. Not a stupid question. They are currently on square bases as they'll all eventually end up on a set of the Secret Weapon Miniatures Bone Fields bases. I started assembly and painting before the bases arrived, so I needed something handy.

Once they are all done, I'll paint up the bone sections of the bases, pin the models to the bases, and then add some gruesome, gorey, viscera to the scene : )

      Cheers

  11. Holy Throne of Terra....they look amazing! Great job!

    As per the list:

HQ - gotta be a Reclusiarch. You can't have Death Company that don't reroll hits and wounds. It's what makes them the meanest unit in the game(on the charge).

You need some rhinos and / or razorbacks for your troops.

consider making a drop pod for the Dread..

again, the painting is absolutely phenomenal.

    1. Hi General

With the Death Company and Assault Squads with jump packs, and the Tactical squad able to ride around in the Storm Raven (with the Dread attached) I figured everything was looking very mobile already.

I will take a closer look at the Reclusiarch. It might be just the punch I've been looking for.

      Cheers
