Greetings from the Warmaster!

So, after a fairly busy week (including a working trip to Cold Wars in Lancaster,PA) I've managed to finish up the Warmaster Horus. This conversion is based on the great artwork by Adrian Smith of the final meeting between Horus and the Emperor. My client wanted Horus to be "less evil" so I did away with the severed heads, stretched faces and one or two other accoutrements. This is Horus at the time of renaming his Legion (from the Luna Wolves to the Sons of Horus) when his faith in the Emperor and the Imperial Truth is on the wane.

Enough of the introduction, I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

The base is from Dragon Forge Design's Lost Empires range. For my money, nothing says "crushing the enemies of Mankind" like a toppled statue.

A couple of posters asked for a scale comparison with a standard Space Marine, so here he is towering over a member of the Legio Custodes. My client has a friend he plays against on a regular basis who has a Ronin Miniatures' Mortarion, so I wanted to make sure Horus could stand up to the Primarch of the Death Guard.

On a final note, here's a teaser of the last commission to finish before Adepticon. Rylanor, the venerable hero of the Emperor's Children Legion and friend to Saul Tarvitz. There's a bit more work to do on him so I better get back to it.

  2. Wow Luprecal came out amazing, as I especially love the eyes. How did you paint the skin as it has a some pinkish/redish tint to it? I look forward to seeing the dred, and your take on pre heresy dreds.

  5. BOOYAH! :) I can't want to see him in Chicago and I DEFINITELY can't wait to throw down with both Horus and Mortarion for the Adepticon Championship!

  6. That looks fabulous. I too love the eye's. Now you need to do the Emperor to go with it!

  7. God, I hate this model! I am a Blood Angels player, so in other words, you made it really really well. =)

  8. He looks pretty damn awesome. The eyes really set the figure off and find myself being drawn to them, but then I am a fallen spirit. :-D

Can't wait to see what is next.

  9. Great conversion and a nice paint job there mate!

The wolf cloak on the back looks like it could maybe use a little more work to bring it to the same level as the rest, but otherwise, wicked stuff as always!

  11. Jeezus, what a great figure. as always, top-notch, man.

One wonders why GW never got around to putting out a Primarch line, since everyone loves the damn things. Do they have their head up their ass in the UK or what? Scrap LoTR and make a Horus Heresy line already. Package a Primarch/other character with each novel, sell the whole thing for $30, and they'll go faster than bargain bottles of Perrier in the Sahara.

  12. Nice work.

Wonder what rules he'll use, Demon Prince? Anyway the face does look good and the one eye to rule them all is very LotR.

His base makes him even taller, but he's definitely eaten his Wheeties today.

  14. Hi guys

Thank you for the kind words, I've had a lot of fun working on this guy!

@ Dante - I took another look at the cloak, and touched it up to add some more depth, thanks for the spot.

    Cheers
    Dave

  16. Absoloutely lovely looking Horus Dave, he's really a lovely figure and you've really done justice to a stunning element of the 40k universe.

  17. That is one gorgeous model.

Any way you can share your method for the Marine's gold armor? I'm having a hard time getting good coverage with Citadel's gold paints, especially on larger surfaces.

  18. @Zach Kay - For my golds I use a base of Hammered Copper from Vallejo (it's the same as the old GW Beaten Copper), then I highlight with GW Shining Gold, then another highlight with a mix of GW Shining Gold and GW Mithril Silver.

For damage and shading on Horus I used either Scorched Brown, or a thinned Scorched Brown/Devlan Mud glaze. A Leviathan Purple wash in the shadows is always good too for extra depth.

Gold over large areas is always tough and for something like a Rhino, Land Raider, or Drop Pod I'd recommend spraying on the Hammered Copper with an airbrush, followed by a spray of Shining Gold, then a few thinned washes.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers
    Dave

  19. Thanks Dave, I appreciate it.
Airbrushing sounds like the best thing to do, handpainting a dreadnought gold was an exercise in futility.

    Cheers!

  20. Hey Dave,

What would you charge for something like this? Provided that you would even consider making another one.
