Mechanicum - Completed Thanatar, and more automata!
I squeezed in a little painting on the weekend, and yesterday my FW Iron Hands decal sheet arrived. I received a neat tip from an excellent modeler on a Facebook HH group about the Mechanicum symbols on the sheet and wanted to use one on the shoulder of my Thanatar. Of course, once the sheet arrived I realized my black shoulder pad wouldn't really display the symbol properly. I quickly went for a deep red on the shoulder pad, added the decal, and then finished it all off with some chips and scratches.
I hope you like it : )
I also finished up the Castellax (his shoulder pad received the same treatment).
And four of my final 12 Thallax. Just eight more to paint now.
And finally the group shot of the recent automata painting spree.
Along with my decal sheet, I received my Cerastus Knight Lancer. I hope to start cleaning and assembling him this weekend : )
Cheers
Dave
Lovely... saw an unpainted Thanatar (no idea what it actually is since I do not play 30K) and wondered how one could paint that making it look cool... you exceeded my ideas!
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. It's basically a monstrous Marine killer. That big gun on its shoulder throws out high-strength low AP templates just perfect for mowing through 20-man squads : )
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! Love the red shoulder plate, definitely gives it a nice spot color against the blue and bronze.
ReplyDeleteThanks mate, I tried to keep it subtle so it didn't compete with the glow.
DeleteBrilliant mate I love them and I'm a big fan of the blue glow
ReplyDeleteAfter checking out your blog, I can see you are : ) Do you mind if I add it to my blog roll?
DeleteTop notch! I can only imagine how cool these guys look in person with this scheme! Great glows, and lovely breakup of the bronze with the weathered red.
ReplyDeleteThanks Greg!
DeleteGorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks : )
DeleteWhat is the name of the HH FB page?
ReplyDeleteHey ST, the groups name is The Horus Heresy Painting And Modelling Group. See you there soon?
DeleteAmazing!
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you're gonna get yourself the new Archmagos on abeyant, because I think you'd do an awesome job and it be great to see leading these.

I will definitely be getting one of those. After I put together and paint my Knight-Lancer ; )
DeleteI love the blue glow you painted on the Thanatar's plasma mortar. The contrast between the dark bronze/tin and the blue/white is perfect. I think I might need to borrow you for some OSL training.
ReplyDeleteNo that you are going to Adepticon, I highly recommend you take Victoria Lamb's OSL class. Make sure you are online the first day tickets go on sale though. Her classes go FAST!
DeleteQuestions fellas. Adepticons hotel seems full. Is there another recommended hotel nearby that people stay at? I really want to go for the painting classes!
DeleteHi Greg, I'm sure there are, but couldn't tell you what they were off the top of my head. Look for hotels around the Schaumburg Convention Center or Schaumburg Mall (which is massive and itself draws lots of folks for weekend shopping trips, hence quite a few hotels).
DeleteThanks Dave,
DeleteWould be great to meet some of you lovely folks there. And I can pick John's brain until he just hands me a pot of oils.
That's pretty snazzy, Dave!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jake : )
DeleteVery nice! I love the OSL
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for a crimson color like on the shoulderpad. Can you share what color it is?
Thanks : )
DeleteAs for the crimson color, I started with black and highlighted up by adding Vallejo Model Color Hull Red, then I went on to add a little Vallejo Model Color Flat Red. Make sure you take into account the size/shape of any decal you might be putting over the top : )
Awesome color scheme! Consider the recipe stolen for my Minotaurs :-)
DeleteWould you mind sharing how you do the plasma glow effect?
Absolutely stunning work! I'll second Alpharius's request for a tutorial on that plasma glow, it looks so good!
