Horus Heresy - Death Guard Tactical Squad


Another Sunday Update : )

In one of my earlier posts, I talked about how I'd gone and sprayed over some of my original Death Guard models. I was worried that I'd be unable to match the original colors. Well, turns out that the new colors match the originals so well, that I was able to take another 12 older models and swiftly update them this week. No re-spraying required : )


I certainly have all I need for my Killzone team, but I have a few friends who are building fully fledged armies. I couldn't let them get too far ahead. Here is my first 20-man foot slogger unit.

    I was hoping a full death guard force was in the making. With all these heresy armies popping up near DC, all we need now is a heresy era gaming group.

    I just placed an order for Massacre, a Spartan, Breachers, and some more Heavy Support guys to finish off a few squads. It'll be a while I think before I pick up Calas Typhon and the Grave Wardens. : )

      Spartans seem to be the goto unit in the books. Add a flare shield and the are unstoppable. I am really looking forward to seeing your treatment of it. The new drop claw thing looks interesting as well.

      I've always loved the Spartan, I even made one way back in the day based on the plans in WD, but I certainly don't know where that one is any more. The current incarnation seems ideally suited for the Death Guard approach to warfare ; )

    What is your painting recipe for these DG?
    I like the fact they look a bit cleaner and less on the path to Nurgle.

      Hi Vulkaan

      I'll have to do something on it soon, but the basics are:
      • Basecoat with P3 Bastion Grey
      • Airbrush with mix of P3 Bastion Grey/VMC Pale Sand
      • Airbrush with mix of Bastion Grey/Pale Sand/White
      • Shade back with Bastion Grey as required
      • Edge highlights where appropriate with white.

      I hope that helps until I get a comprehensive post done.

      Thanks for that. I think the grey works much better than some of the more boneish colour some people tend to use as a base

      Agreed. I think this provides a better contrast for the weathering and the rusty bitz.

    I love the detail you put into these; like the ridged boots or extra rivets on the greaves and pauldrons. It really sells the heresy-era look even on non-FW models.

      Thank you. Those builds are from "back in the day" when there were no FW models and we had to make do with a bunch of MkVI and VII plastics ; )
